Discussion:
Help with our GSoC application
(too old to reply)

Hi everyone.

I could use any help that you are willing to give to write our
application to be a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code
2012. Just edit the wiki page at
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2012-Organization-Application.
The deadline is March 9, 23:00 UTC (3:00 PM PST), which is this
Friday. I meant to get to it this weekend, but unfortunately didn't
get the chance.

Even if you don't want to edit the application, any thoughts on the
sorts of things we should include in it would be welcome.

Also, if anyone wants to collaborate on this over IRC, just ping me there.

It would also help if someone could update the formatting of these wiki pages:

https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/old-wiki-GSo-C2007
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/old-wiki-GSoC2008
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/old-wiki-GSoC2009
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/old-wiki-GSoC2010

and the pages that they link to, so that we don't have to link to the
respective pages on the old wiki in the application. For reference,
the old wiki pages are at

http://code.google.com/p/sympy/wiki/GSoC2007
http://code.google.com/p/sympy/wiki/GSoC2008
http://code.google.com/p/sympy/wiki/GSoC2009
http://code.google.com/p/sympy/wiki/GSoC2010

You can find the pages that are linked to at
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/_pages.

Please see last year's report page at
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/Gsoc-2011-report for how these
should be formatted.

Last night, I updated them and Aaron moved them so as to drop the 'old
wiki' designation. They're currently all at
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2007-Report and similarly for 08,
09 and 10. The links to them are on the front page of the wiki with the
other GSoC material.

So, for now, please just help with the application itself.

Thanks a ton for fixing these by the way. I wouldn't have gotten
around to it. This will look much better to the people at Google who
are reading through our application, and is something that needed to
be done anyway (and still needs to be done for the rest of the "old
wiki" pages btw).

Exactly this. The GSoC pages from the old wiki are up at:

https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2007-Report
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2008-Report
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2009-Report
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2010-Report

Looking at them, a couple of the reports need to be cleaned up a bit to use
Markdown for everything, but the bulk of the old GSoC stuff has been moved
over and reformatted.

I've gone through the whole application and added stuff to it. In
general, what we had was already pretty good, so I didn't change much.
You can look at the diff in the git history if you are interested in
what I changed (you'll want to use something like --color-words,
though, because I also did a lot of line wrapping, since I edited it
in emacs).

I am going to go in right now and submit what we have so far, so that
it's done. But I can still update stuff up until the deadline.

So any additional help is appreciated. Even if you just read through
what is there and make sure that there are no typos or simple
grammatical mistakes, that would help a lot (I noticed a few that were
there from last year's application). Or if you want to make more
drastic changes to the text, do that as well.

One question: in last year's application we had a link to
https://github.com/sympy/ as a list of people with push access to the
main repo. But the list of people there is not that. Does anyone
know of a public list of the people with push access to the repo? The
only place anywhere that I could find with this information was the
private admin preferences in GitHub.

Once again, the page is at
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2012-organization-application.

Done, there weren't that many (and they were minor anyway).

So the application period has ended, and I've submitted what is
currently on that page. Please do not edit that page any further
(except for the links section at the end, because that's not actually
part of application). If you see anything that you think should be
changed, please edit
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2013-organization-application.

Google will announce if we were accepted on March 16 at 19:00 UTC, and
I will send an email to the list announcing the result at that time.

You can, and I encourage you to, still edit
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2012-ideas and
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2012-application-template.
Google will be looking at these when they review our application, so
this is important. They likely will not start looking until Monday,
so you can edit them this weekend. And anyway, if we are accepted,
they can change up to the student application deadline.

If anyone is able to mentor, please add your name to the bottom of
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/gsoc-2012-ideas. Google will be
looking at how many mentors we have, so even if you are not sure,
please put your name there. It is not binding. You can back out
later if you want, and you will only mentor a project if you
specifically want to.

Finally, I should note that I was contacted by someone from Sage to
add a bit to vouch for them, so I did this (see the last question).
